TEST ITEM - Devi enters Battle with Shumba, Pahari, early 19th century,

Devi enters Battle with Shumba, Pahari, early 19th century, scene from the Devimahatmya (part of the Markandeya Purana)

gouache on paper, the multi-armed goddess rides on her lion, her opponent seated on a two horse chariot.

Provenance: Formerly in the Collection of Jagdish Mittal; Private Collection, Germany. The Devimahatmya (Glorification of the Goddess) is a major section of the Markandeya Purana, an epic probably composed around the eight century AD. In this 700-verse work, the story is told of the goddess's battle with the asuras, demons of untruthfulness. For another group of Devimahatmya paintings in the Lahore Museum, see Pahari Paintings, F. S. Aijazuddin, London, 1977, pl.41ff.
