LOT NUMBER 1
Sevres/Sevres style cup and saucer depicting the Empress Josephine, C20th
A cup and saucer, the cup of flaring beaker form with a spreading base and an elaborately shaped gilt handle, the saucer with a deep central well and a narrow rim, richly decorated in polychrome enamels the cup with an oval medallion portrait of a lady edged with a gilt stylised floral border, set on a green ground with gilt floral decoration, two black ground circular gilt medallions and a white ground bands of gilt floral decoration with enamel highlights, the saucer similarly decorated, the base of the saucer with an overglaze transfer mark in iron red, a crown above the letter ‘N’.The lady depicted is the Empress Josephine and pairs of cups and saucers are known with the companion figure of Napoleon and the same mark. This format of mark was used by the well known factory Sevres of France in the nineteenth century but with the addition of date code numbers. Their absence here indicates a C20th pastiche or copy, probably but not certainly manufactured by Sevres. But the quality of Sevres work is definitely there, contributing to a decorative item of great charm.
