French Art Deco Cartier inspired Tutti Frutti brooch, c1930
This is a very rare brooch comprised of bright paste and glass stones set in silver with a barrel security clasp. It is ummarked, but undoubtedly from the French Art Deco period. The design follows the range of jewels produced by Cartier in the 1920s and 1930s which used colourful stones acquired in India. This highly popular range was known at the time as 'pierres de couleur’ and only acquired its title 'tutti fruti' in the 1970s. Doubtless brooches like this made a more affordable alternative to the Cartier originals!
