LOT NUMBER 6
Japanese Arita Dish decorated with two Ho Ho Birds, Meiji period, circa 1900
Japanese Arita dish of shallow bowl form with a lightly modelled lobed and pointed edge, decorated in polychrome enamels and underglaze blue in the typical style with a design of two 'Ho Ho' birds (the Japanese version of the Phoenix) and clouds between two stylised floral panels. The centre with an urn set in a stylised landscape scene, the exterior with tasseled scrolls and the base with a small 'shop' mark, all in underglaze blue. The style of decoration and the paste of the foot suggest a circa date towards the end of the Meiji period (1868-1912). This dish would have formed part of an original set, probably of five pieces.Size: | 11.5 cm diameter |
