Chinese blue and white porcelain Plaque with two horses, framed, C20th

A Chinese porcelain plaque decorated in underglaze blue with underglaze copper red detail depicting two horses galloping across a field with rocks, two calligraphic inscriptions to the top left. The theme of two horses in Chinese tradition refers to harmony, partnership, and swift success. They are associated with the motto ‘Ma Dao Cheng Gong’ (馬到成功), which translates ‘horses arrive, and with them success’ and the characters of this motto are contained in the left of the two calligraphic inscriptions, the right hand inscription possibly containing the name of the artist. The style of the drawing very loosely resembles that of the famous Chinese artist Wang Bu (1898-1968), known from many fine and original works by his hand but much copied by other porcelain painters in the twentieth century. The general effect of this piece and the flat mirror like finish to the tile itself suggest a dating to the Republican period (1912–1949) and the wood of the frame is not inconsistent with this. The scene here is not commonly found amongst porcelain tiles from this period and the addition of the underglaze copper red detail, again an unusual feature, indicates no small amount of care in the production.
