LOT NUMBER 17
Chinese Blue and White Snuff Bottle and Stopper, early C20th
A Chinese porcelain snuff bottle and stopper, the round slender pear shape body with a concave neck and a lobed ‘garlic’ rim decorated with a typical landscape scene of rocky outcrops, trees pavilions and a lake with mountains and birds in the distance, the cap form stopper in blue with an unglazed wand, the glazed base with an artemisia leaf. The form here is rather less commonly found than the standard flattened ovoid shape and the work recalls pieces from the Kangxi period (1662- 1722) where an artemisia leaf is often found as decoration underneath, but the paste of the foot and the style of the painting indicate rather later work, most likely dating to the early twentieth century. But the traditions of old have been well maintained and this is an attractive piece in miniature which has survived in excellent condition.| Size: | Ht (overall) 8.5cm, Ht (base) 7.8cm, Width (max) 4cm, Base 2cm, Stopper : length 2.2cm, width (max) 1cm |
