Chinese Cantonese style hexagonal Jar and Cover, C20th

A Chinese porcelain jar and cover, the body of flattened hexagonal form above a spreading foot and below a shouldered rim, the cover overhanging with a circular knob and the base with a countersunk foot. The decoration is in ‘Famille Rose’ enamels in a wide palette of colours in the nineteenth century ‘Cantonese’ style; two main panels of birds and flowers and four smaller panels with landscape scenes on a stylised ‘cracked ice’ ground with flower heads, the base and top rim with two forms of repeating key pattern and the neck and lid with stylised floral decoration on a yellow ground. The form here was introduced in the nineteenth century but copied again in the twentieth as is the case here where the paste of the foot rim and general style of the decoration indicate later work. But the quality has been reasonably well maintained and dating is probably no later than around 1950, providing an attractive and accessible accessory for a contemporary setting.
