LOT NUMBER 15
Chinese cloisonné Vase decorated birds, C20th
A Chinese cloisonné vase of baluster form, the ovoid body above a spreading foot and below a stepped concave neck, the top and bottom finished with gilt metal bands and the base in blue enamel, the decoration in the cloisonné technique of polychrome glass derived enamels set in wire outlines (the so called ‘cloisons’ from the French word), with birds in a stylised garden scene with lotus on a black ground with a wire inlay design representing clouds, between elaborate borders at the top and bottom including ‘ju’i’ lappets and stylised lotus leaves. The cloisonné technique was developed in China in the early Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and then used throughout, right up until the C20th; indeed pieces are still produced today. The later examples can have their own charm and often the quality of the work is excellent, as here, with an imaginative use of colours and shading effects to the enamels. Dating is most likely to the early twentieth century and this vase clearly shows that a high standard of workmanship was still maintained at this time.| Size: | Ht 13cm, Width (max) 7cm, Base 4.6cm |
