LOT NUMBER 18
Chinese Famille Rose Snuff Bottle and Stopper, early C20th
A Chinese porcelain snuff bottle and stopper, the cylindrical body with a stepped shoulder, a short concave neck and a modelled rim, decorated in Famille Rose enamels with a bird sitting on a branch of flowering peony, a two character signature to the reverse, the glazed base with an artemisia leaf in iron red, the cap form stopper with an unglazed wand. While the decoration recalls eighteenth century export wares the paste of the foot and the style of painting indicates a rather later dating here, probably to the beginning of the twentieth century. But the design is attractive and deserves its artist’s signature, which cannot be identified, and the piece has survived in excellent condition.| Size: | Ht (overall) 8.5cm, Ht (bottle) 8cm, Diam 3cm Stopper : (length) 2.2cm, (width max 1.5cm) |
