Chinese pumpkin shape Teapot with cream craquelure glaze circa 1900

This is an unusual Chinese teapot of ‘pumpkin’ form with a typically lobed body but of extremely compressed proportions, with a short spout, a shallow fitted lid and flattened loop handle in the form of a stylised dragon. It is clearly ‘archaistic’ in style and the cream craquelure glaze recalls pieces from the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) and even before, particularly the so called ‘guan ware’, but while earlier lobed pieces can be found, particularly shallow bowls, there do not seem to be any precedents for this form of teapot and there are no parallels amongst later pieces either. The paste of the foot and the general style of the glaze certainly indicate a dating to around 1900 and just possibly slightly before. A piece, then, for a curious collector who might perhaps be lucky enough to make further discoveries about its origin.
