Japanese coiled Snake Netsuke

A Japanese boxwood netsuke sculpture of a coiled snake, seated with its tongue protruding, the eyes inset with small hardstones [CHECK] and the scale rendered in detail with an incised artist’s mark to underside next to the two attachment holes. Netsuke were carved toggles used to attach hanging objects, usually okimono, to the sash of a kimono and became the subject of the master carver’s art, sometimes of the very highest class. They were formed from ivory or wood, as here, and usually display the holes through which the fastening cord was threaded. While there is certainly skill in the carving, the artist’s signature cannot be identified. Netsuke began to fall out of fashion in the nineteenth century as European dress gradually became more popular but a dating to this period seems reasonable.
