LOT NUMBER 8
Japanese white metal Tobacco Box, Liner and Cover, mark to the base, Early C20th
A white metal box and cover, with an interior liner, of rounded rectangular form, tapering inwards towards the base, each of the four sides finely decorated with repousse work dragons amidst flames on a finely detailed punchwork ground within a key pattern border, the cover similarly decorated and the inner liner plain with a knob handle, the base with an incised diamond shape mark. The presence of the inner liner suggests the storage of tobacco here so that we have a striking smoker’s accessory displaying no small amount of skill in its manufacture. Similar marks are seen elsewhere but the identity of the manufacturer is unknown. Dating is most likely to the early twentieth century towards the end of the Meiji era (1868-1912)| Size: | Ht (max) 9cm, Ht (box + liner) 8cm, Width (max) 12cm, Depth (max) 7cm, Base 9.8cm x 4.7cm, Liner 9cm x 4cm |
| Weight: | 605gm |
| Date: | Early C20th |
| Condition: | Excellent condition, no issues |
| Estimate: | £20 – 30 |
