Japanese wood Netsuke of a Cobra, signed, C19th

A Japanese boxwood netsuke sculpture of a cobra, seated coiled with its head upraised and mouth open with the tongue protruding, the scale naturalistically rendered even to the underside where there is an incised artist’s mark. The eyes are inset with small hardstones [CHECK] which is an additional sign of the quality of the work here which would have required no small amount of skill to create such an ‘open’ composition. Netsuke were carved toggles used to attach hanging objects, usually okimono, to the sash of a kimono and became the subject of the master carver’s art, sometimes of the very highest class. They were formed from ivory or wood, as here, and usually display the holes through which the fastening cord was threaded but this is not the case here because of the nature of the composition. While there is certainly abundant artistry, the carver’s signature cannot be identified. Netsuke began to fall out of fashion in the nineteenth century as European dress gradually became more popular but a dating to this period seems reasonable.
