Japanese wood Netsuke of a Goat, signed, C19th

A Japanese boxwood netsuke sculpture of a seated goat, its head turned expectantly to the right, the fur naturalistically rendered and the underside with modelling marks and a signature carved to the rear left foot. Netsuke were carved toggles used to attach hanging objects, usually okimono, to the sash of a kimono and became the subject of the master carver’s art, sometimes of the very highest class. They were formed from ivory or wood, as here, and always display the holes through which the fastening cord was threaded (see image 3). There is certainly artistry to be seen in this example, particularly in the rendering of the head (see image 6) but the artist’s signature cannot be identified. Netsuke began to fall out of fashion in the nineteenth century as European dress gradually became more popular but a dating here to this period seems reasonable.
