LOT NUMBER 9
Ottoman silver marriage Mirror, Turkey, early 20th century
This is a beautiful small mirror of lobed ovoid form decorated to the reverse with a very fine repousse work design of stylised lotus sprays within a stylised floral bloom itself within a chain link border and fan shape devices all on a chased hammer punched ground of small circles. There are marks '925' for the silver purity and 'ISIK' for the maker. The mirror itself is framed by a simple border with stylised shells and flower heads again on a hammer punched ground. These mirrors, small and with finely worked designs in silver, were a traditional aspect of the Turkish marriage ceremony where they are given by the groom to the bride as part of a dowry, then to be hung in the home for good luck, usually turned around with the reverse facing front during prayer ceremonies. This is a fine example of the type with high quality craftsmanship and most likely dates to the early twentieth century.| Size: | 16cm x 12.5cm |
| Weight: | 373 gm |
| Date: | early 20th century |
| Condition: | Very good condition generally with no dents to the surface; the mirror with a small amount of loss to the silver backing at the edge (see image 6). |
| Estimate: | £60 – 80 |
