Pair of Japanese Arita Vases decorated with Oni, late C19th

A pair of ceramic vases of tapering ovoid form with a galleried rim, decorated in polychrome enamels with complementary scenes of oni, or demons, one offering a drink on a cushion to a terrified attendant and the other in pursuit of a fleeing maiden whom he holds fast by her left leg, both with scrolling lotus to the reverse, the bases glazed white but not marked. Oni were a fundamental part of Japanese folklore and were often represented in art, usually with exaggerated bodies and sometimes with three eyes, as is the case with one of the demons here. There is more humour than terror in these images but the work cannot be attributed with certainty to any of the known ceramics factories and is best termed Arita from its use of a wide palette of colours. The paste of the foot rim, though, clearly indicates late nineteenth century work, presumably made for export to the West.
