LOT NUMBER 38
Turkish Ottoman style bone Perfume Bottle, C20th
A bone perfume bottle, the flattened ovoid body tapering towards the top with a ridged circular neck, amusingly painted in bright colours with a continuous scene of dignitaries in a howdah borne by an elephant surrounded by attendants riding elephants, the neck with gilt and stylised floral decoration. These perfume bottles seem to be early twentieth century work made in Turkey and recalling, in a rather sketchy fashion (here nearly literally so) art from the earlier years of the Ottoman empire. The bone is said to be camel, but this may be apocryphal. Originally the bottle would have been fitted with a cover with a wand below and perhaps with a tall slender knob as is seen on other pieces, but the lack of this here should not detract too much from an attractive example of the genre with its colourful and spirited scenes.| Size: | Ht 11cm, Width (max) 4.5cm, Depth (max) 3cm, Top diam 1.8cm |
