LOT NUMBER 1
Green bakelite Sweetheart Brooch, 1940s
This is an example of the memento brooches which were made during the second World War when bakelite was the material most often used for these pieces as opposed to the metal frames of the first World War examples. Dating is therefore to the 1940s and it is most likely an English piece that we have here, to judge from the uniform of the serviceman displayed in the centre. The simple round green bakelite frame, a less common colour, is suspended from a metal bar with curls at each end and the fastening clasp to the rear. Perhaps one is supposed to see a medal here and certainly its owner probably thought that her boyfriend or perhaps even fiancé deserved one. He is handsome enough and gives us a charming piece of history.Size: | 2.5 cm diameter |
