LOT NUMBER 31
Chinese ovoid carved wood Tobacco Jar decorated dragons, early C20th
A Chinese Carved Wood Tobacco Jar of ovoid form with a flush fitting circular lid, the body deeply carved with a forward facing dragon to the front surrounded by three swirling dragons all on a ground of minute punch work scattered with pearls, a key pattern border to the base and the lid with a stylised floral border to the edge and a further fifth dragon to the top, the interior with a removable metal lining. The carving here is very similar to that found on a Chinese wood box elsewhere in this sale. Like that, this piece is made from a form of rosewood and carved in a technique which is more vigorous than detailed but which still produces an arresting decorative effect. Dating would be similar and to the early twentieth century and it was probably made as an export piece although at least one examples has been found with the military inscription of a regiment based in the Far East which implies a more local market. Not all examples retain their lids, so while it has some old damage this piece is offered complete with its original cover.Size: | Ht (overall - max) 17.5cm (jar) 15cm, Diam (max) 10.5cm, Base 7.3cm |
