LOT NUMBER 19
Rectangular Footed Green Onyx Box and Cover, G.S.E. Ottone Garantito, 1960s
A box and cover of rectangular form constructed from joined sections of light green veined onyx, the base and lid gilt metal mounted with four small claw feet, markings on the bottom and side ‘G.S.E. Ottone Garantito’ (‘guaranteed brass’). Onyx is named from the Greek 'ónux', meaning “nail,” or “claw,” and is a variety of the mineral chalcedony, a kind of quartz. Onyx with flesh-coloured and white bands can sometimes resemble a fingernail which explains the name but is obviously not in evidence here. The mark confirms an Italian origin and a mid twentieth century dating seems likely.Size: | W 13 cm D 9.5 cm H 5 cm |
