Vintage Fakiolas Ceramic Box and Cover, marked 24k Gold, late C20th

This is a rather lavish box and cover made by the Greek firm Fakiolas and dating to the late twentieth century. The deep blue ground contrasts with the rich gilt decoration which the mark underneath announces to be ‘24K Gold’. Fakiolas produced many pieces in this style in a wide variety of shapes all sharing similar pastiche Greek mythological scenes, somewhat resembling the vase paintings of a much earlier era. On the lid we see three semi clad lady musicians in a stylised garden setting within geometric and stylised floral borders while the base is finished with a band of classical Greek key pattern below a thick gilt border. The underneath is marked with Fakiolas’ name and the wording ‘HANDMADE IN GREECE 24K GOLD’. A modest touch of opulence, then, for the dressing table perhaps.
