Circular Glass Panel depicting a Chinoiserie Scene, Hotelier Limited, Leeds, England, 1960s
This is an amusing painted glass panel in a style sometimes described as 'kitsch'. The domed circular glass is decorated to the reverse with a transfer applied Chinese scene of a lady standing on a terrace overlooking a lake with boats. There are rocks and storks in the foreground and mountains and rocks in the background. Many of the familiar elements of Chinese landscape scenes can be seen including plantain, willow, prunus and pine. The decorator reproduces a composition more often found on Chinese 'reverse glass' pictures but in a 20th century version. Purely modern, though, are the painted clouds in the background which combine attractively with the design on the glass. Similar round domed glass panels can be found in a variety of designs including a lady in a crinoline dress and flying ducks. Some are labelled, as here. The stamped mark is rather indistinct but seems to read 'Hotelier Limited, Leeds' surrounded by 'Made in England' in a circle. These pieces are usually dated to the 1960s which could relate to the emerging popularity of cartoon characters at that time.Size: | 40 cm diameter |
