Antique French Eglomise Grand Tour Souvenir Scent Bottle, c1850
Antique French Eglomise Grand Tour Souvenir Scent Bottle, one side with a finely painted representation of the Hotel des Invalides, perhaps rendered on a pearl backing, the other with a mirror, both the glass faces bevelled. These are encased in a gilt metal surround the neck of which is fitted with a stopper. A gilt chain links the bottle and the stopper to a thin gilt ring which would probably have been suspended itself from a ‘chatelaine’.The stopper has small glass apertures on either side and through one of these can be seen (admittedly with some difficulty) some black and white views of interior scenes which may possibly be those of the Invalides itself.
The Hotel des Invalides was commissioned by Louis XIV in 1670. Construction took place over many years with additions and enhancements to the original design. Intended as a hospital and rest home for wounded or aged soldiers (‘invalides’) the building eventually became the burial place of distinguished French military figures and most notably Napoleon whose tomb can be found there.
This finely worked piece is typical of the best ‘Grand Tour’ souvenirs reflecting the elegance and style of the pieces produced at that time.
