LOT NUMBER 21
Framed Stumpwork Panel depicting a Bowl of Flowers, English, 1930s
An attractive oval embroidered panel depicting a bowl of flowers on a beige silk ground. The technique employed here is known as stumpwork where stitched figures are raised from the surface of the work to form a 3-dimensional effect. Its popularity began in England in the mid seventeenth century but has been continued by embroiderers until modern times. The appeal of the design here speaks for itself. A date of production in the 1930s seems likely. The gilt frame may be contemporary or later.Size: | 34cm x 44cm |
