LOT NUMBER 26
Japanese tooled and painted Leather Clutch Bag, 1930s
This is another clutch bag with an Japanese twist. The form is again typical, a rectangular wallet with a flap cover and two interior compartments between a zipped central bag, the rear compartment with a fabric pocket, all finished in beige silk with leather concertina sides. The body of the bag is in mustard leather with elaborate tooled and coloured designs, the front flap with two panels, one square and one rectangular, the first with buildings by a lake and the second with figures in a rice field with Mount Fuji in the background, the surface underneath with a bridge over a river with mountains and a pagoda in the distance, the back, which also has a diagonal holding strap, with a riverside scene, trees on both the banks and three figures making their way along an adjoing path. The flap is secured by a large popper with a celluloid elephant at the bottom edge. The workmanship here is obvious and the bag, which probably dates, like others similar, to the 1930s has survived in good condition, to be enjoyed and perhaps used today like its counterpart.Size: | Width 21cm, Ht 12.3cm, Depth 1.5cm |
