Majolica palissy style Walnut Dish, Roque Gaeiras, Portugal, second half C20th

A ceramic dish, brightly glazed in the majolica style with a trompe l’oeil representation of walnuts resting on the surface, the base pierced for hanging and with impressed marks ‘Roque’ ‘Gaeiras’ ‘Obidos’ ‘Portugal’. Roque Gaeiras was a producer of pieces termed majolica although the glaze effects used here are a very distant relation to the early tin glazed Italian and Spanish wares which share the name. Nineteenth century majolica made in England and the continent employed a wide variety of brightly coloured glazes applied to an extensive range of elaborate forms and sometimes looking back to the productions of the famous sixteenth century French ceramicist, Bernard Palissy, who specialised in producing platters with naturalistic wildlife designs including snakes and lobsters surrounded by plants (see image 8). Gaeiras made similar wares but also this simpler design with a small pile of walnuts. Obidos, where his pottery was situated, is in the Oeste region to the north of Portugal about an hour’s drive from Lisbon and with substantial mediaeval remains (see image 7). Gaeiras produced his majolica ware there in the second half of the twentieth century and produced many pieces which successfully recreate those of his celebrated predecessor.
