LOT NUMBER 4
Moulin Rouge after an original by Caroline Burnett, C20th
The subject of this attractive painting is the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret, situated near to Montmatre in Paris and distinguished by the red windmill on its roof. The signature ‘BURNET’ (note the spelling) points to the famous American artist Caroline C. Burnett (1877-1950) a British-American artist known primarily for her Impressionist paintings of Paris street scenes. Her pictures, painted over a long career after she began exhibiting in the late 1890s, proved to be extremely popular with tourists seeking a modestly priced but individual representation of the city they had come to visit. Painted in a highly accessible style her Parisian scenes are collected today but their popularity is such that they are also imitated. One major sign of authenticity is the form of signature, which should always appear at the bottom right hand corner, written in brown capitals. The signature here passes these two tests but unfortunately omits the final letter of her name. The copyist, then, could hardly be accused of major deception and rather has produced a highly attractive image ‘in the style of’ which should be enjoyed on its own merits.Size: | Frame : 31.3cm x 26.5cm; Canvas : 24cm x 19.3cm |
