Novelty Teapot in the form of an apple, probably English, late C20th, early C21st

Despite the obvious form, this is not an object intended for practical use! Purely decorative, this teapot is made to resemble an apple, the green body with a yellow ‘blush’ front and back and the lid a detachable stalk with leaves. Similar examples, some with a bite mark to the fruit, are marked ‘Sunshine Ceramics’ with dates of 1986 and 1987. Sunshine Ceramics was set up by Paul Cardew in the 1980s at his 19th century farmhouse in Devon. Teapots were a speciality but his most famous productions were the pig models made for Natwest in the 1980s, some of which are highly collectible now. This teapot is so similar to Cardew’s marked productions that his pottery is most likely the source. Perhaps it was made from the original moulds later on or after his retirement in 2008 since production did continue for some years thereafter.
