Doulton Plate from the Jackdaw of Rheims series, early C20th
This is a plate from a 16 series edition produced by Royal Doulton from 1906 onwards and illustrating the tale ‘The Jackdaw of Rheims’ which was one of the most famous stories from the book ‘The Ingoldsby Legends’, a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poems written supposedly by a Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, but actually from the pen of an English clergyman named Richard Harris Barham. The story tells how a jackdaw stole a Cardinal’s ring but was eventually canonised as a saint. Depicted here is a monk in contemplation and in the background can be seen the signature ‘NOKE’ for Charles Noke, a renowned art director for Royal Doulton and one of the designers who collaborated on the series. The work is transferware with an element of hand colouring and the format of the Royal Doulton mark at the back suggests a dating to the 1930s; the script numbers are the pattern number. Some collectors of the series may find this plate a welcome addition to their collection!| Size: | Diam 24cm, Ht 3cm, Base 13.5cm |
