Indian Soapstone Box with Pietra Dura Inlay, C20th

An oval soapstone box and cover, the sides of the box with reticulated or openwork lattice decoration and the flush fitting lid with ‘pietra dura’ inlay flowers. The technique of ‘pietra dura’ (literally ‘hard stone’) inlay in which polished and precisely cut, coloured and semi-precious stones were used to create intricate designs in stone (usually marble) was developed in Florence in the 16th century and then used around a hundred years later in the decoration of the Taj Mahal in India. The technique continued to be employed and is found even in pieces made in fairly modern times. These soapstone boxes were made in India and some retain their label stating this. Dating is probably to the mid twentieth century and these attractive pieces would be well suited for storing trinket items today.
