Two brass bulldog paperweights, mid C20th
Two brass figures of bulldogs, one sitting erect and one crouching, each solid cast and expressively modelled. These small brass bulldogs are usually regarded as paperweights and appear to have been popular around the time of the second world war as an example of British stubbornness and tenacity. Some see reminiscences here of ‘John Bull’ and others the great ‘bulldog’ himself, Winston Churchill. Most likely, then, these two ‘mastiffs’ date to the 1940s and can carry out their function today just as well as they did all those years ago.| Size: | (i) Resting on front paws) Length (max) 10cm, Width (max) 6cm, Ht (max) 7.5cm (ii) Crouching) Length (max) 8cm, Width (max) 5.5cm, Ht (max) 7.2cm |
| Weight: | 805gm (both) |
| Date: | 1940s |
| Condition: | Good condition, no issues |
| Estimate: | £40 – 60 |
