Arts and Crafts brass Tray with hammered decoration, early C20th
An oval brass tray polished at the front, the sunken centre with a broad flat rim, the interior decorated with a punched or ‘hammered’ design and the outer rim with six embossed stylised flowers, probably intended to represent lotus, the reverse unpolished. There are slightly hybrid design elements here. The general form draws on the aesthetic of the Arts and Crafts movement with its emphasis on simplicity of design and a slightly rustic appearance whereas the six flower heads with their flowing semi abstract design reflect more the style of Art Nouveau. The two design trends were partially contemporary, of course, and not dissimilar in their objectives so that there was sometimes an overlapping between the two. Unsigned, this tray was probably made as a modest decorative item for the home but it has an appeal of its own, even when set beside rather more grand productions. Dating is probably to the Edwardian period when this style was still very much in vogue.| Size: | Width 33cm, Depth 26cm, Ht 1.5cm, Base (max) 25.8cm x 18cm |
