Oblong Dish decorated Fish, Bareuther Waldwassen, Germany, dated 1995
An oblong porcelain dish decorated with grisaille coloured carp swimming on a blue wash ground representing water, the reverse glazed white with a green stamped or microdot printed mark ‘Bareuther Waldwassen Bavaria Germany 154’ and blue script writing, apparently fired, reading “Fantastic Flying Fish” ‘by Vincent Worley -for Margaret- 1995’. Bareuther Waldwassen was founded in 1866 by Johann Mathäus Riess. It went through a variety of changes of ownership and name but continued to produce fine quality porcelains until it went into liquidation in 1994. The green mark seen here was the latest the firm used and dates between 1970 and 1993. This dish has an amusing and attractive design but there are no parallels; furthermore the blue script writing on the back is something of a mystery since the date (1995) is after the firm ceased trading. Since the writing seems to be fired it is possible that both it and the design on the front were added in 1995 to a blank from the bankrupt factory. This could explain the design which looks much more English than German and indeed recalls more pieces from the 1960s. Something of a curiosity then albeit a rather attractive one.| Size: | Width (max) 31.5cm, Depth (max) 20.5cm, Ht 3cm, Base (max) 22.5cm x 13.5cm |
