Set of four Empire style cups and saucers, Heinrich & Co, Selb Bavaria, 1960s

A set of four fine porcelain cups and saucers in the ‘empire style’, the cups with a spreading foot and an elaborate branch form handle, the saucers a deep well and a modelled border to the interior, each with a monochrome glaze and gilt highlights. Franz Henrich began his porcelain manufacturing business in Selb, Bavaria, in 1896, initially working from his parents’ house with just one assistant. But Porzellanfabrik Heinrich Selb grew to become one of the largest porcelain producers in Germany with around 500 employees in the 1930s. After a hiatus Production resumed at the end of the Second World War in 1945 and by the 1970s the number of employees had grown to around 800. In 1986 the firm became part of Villeroy and Boch but pieces were still produced under its name. The firm was known for its high quality tablewares and these four cups are an excellent example of their later work, retrospective in design but dated by the marks to the 1960s.
