Bohemian Green Glass Moser style Ewer, late C19th

A small green glass ewer, the slender body of rounded inverted cone form above a rounded spreading foot, the narrow cylindrical neck with a deeply scalloped rim forming the spout and to the side a tall loop handle, decorated with beaded gilt bands and flowers, the top rim and handle with traces of gilding. The form and decoration here is typical of the so called ‘Bohemian’ glass produced for export in the nineteenth century by the workshops from the regions of Bohemia and Silesia, now parts of the Czech Republic. With its origins in the renaissance, Bohemian glass in elaborate forms and with colourful decoration of thickly enamelled floral subjects was made in substantial quantities in the second half of the nineteenth century satisfying an eager demand in both Europe and America. This ewer resembles pieces made by the well known factory Moser but is unlikely to be one of their productions, more a modest version for a mass audience. But it is highly representative of the style and attractive in its own right.
Size: H 44 cm W 8 cm
Weight: 220 grams
Date: 1880
Condition: Good condition generally; very slight rubbing to the gilding on the handle and top rim (see images)
Estimate: £30 – 40
