Set of Four Japanese Beakers decorated Geisha, late C20th
A set of four Japanese beakers, straight walled with an incurving black glazed foot, the white ground decorated in coloured enamels with four geisha with elaborate hair styles and wearing differing versions of the traditional kimono dress, each with an inscription and artist’s seal. The depiction of these ladies recalls loosely the prints of the celebrated eighteenth century Japanese artist Utamoro and the type of kimono worn seems to be ‘furisode’ distinguished by its long flowing sleeves symbolising good luck and prosperity. Some vestiges of tradition, then, in pieces that are relatively recent in date but highly attractive in appearance.Size: | 10 x 7.5 cm |
