LOT NUMBER 22
Sterling Silver Brooch with Amethyst stones, hallmarked 925, 1950s
This is an attractive silver brooch carefully modelled in the form of a lily with detailed moulding to the drooping petals and set with six amethyst stones representing the stamens, the stem swept back and terminating in a rollover curve, a clasp to the reverse and with a hallmark '925'.'925' denotes the silver content of an item and indicates a minimum silver content of 92.5% with the remainder alloy, usually copper. It is impossible to have silver jewellery made from 99.9% pure or fine silver because the content is far too soft to use alone. In order to harden the silver and to maintain the colour and lustre, pure silver is mixed with additional metal so that the new compound is firm and durable enough to be worked with by silversmiths.
