LOT NUMBER 35
Art Deco two handled urn, possibly Dumler and Breiden, Germany 1930s
A ceramic vase of bulbous form with a flat spreading foot and a flaring neck, two loop handles to the shoulder, the cream ground decorated with abstract designs in multicoloured splash glazes with tones of yellow, green, blue and orange, the base with an impressed mark ‘17’. While there are no direct parallels for this piece, a vase with very similar decoration and double loop handles is attributed to the German factory Dumler and Breiden, better known for their post war productions which usually carry their distinctive mark, an interlocking ‘DB’. But the firm was founded in 1883, the paste here is almost certainly continental and very similar to that of other Dumler and Breiden pieces and the glazes resemble those found on marked works, so the attribution is certainly plausible and dating would most likely be to the 1930s which is fully consistent with the Art Deco features of the vase itself. While not all Dumler and Breiden pieces carried their mark, they did usually show the pattern number and sometimes the size, which may well explain the number ‘17’ seen here.| Size: | Ht 27.5cm, Width (max) 19.5cm, Base 13.2cm |
