Coffee Service, Schramberger Majolikafabrik, Adlon pattern, 1960s
This striking coffee service, comprising four cups and saucers, a coffee pot, sugar basin and milk jug, was made by the German firm Schramberg in the 1960s. Founded in 1820, the firm grew and prospered until it was bought by Villeroy and Boche in 1880, until then one of its major clients. Things then declined and it was eventually sold on to the Meyer brothers, Moritz and Leopold, in 1912 who introduced the ‘SMF’ mark (Schramberger Majolikafabrik). Business revived and the firm was to remain in the direction of the family until 1980 when its then proprietor, Peter Meyer, died. After a period of management by various of the directors, the business closed down in 1989.Schramberg were best known for their colourful majolica pieces and worked with well known artists, notably the Hungarian Eva Zeisel, who created innovative designs on their behalf. The pattern here, Adlon, was first produced in the early twentieth century and shows the influence of Art Nouveau. It was reissued in the 1960s, which is the date of this set, and indeed the shapes and decoration equally complement that later era.
