LOT NUMBER 33
Doulton Lambeth Ewer, marked, late C19th
A small ewer, the body of bulbous near globular form above a short ridged spreading foot below a flaring conical neck ridged at the shoulder with a small shaped spout opposite a loop handle, the modelled decoration with bead edged circular panels of stylised flower heads separated by bead edged bars on a geometric ground of small repeating triangular devices, the neck with repeating stylised leaves and fleur de lis, all glazed in shades of brown and blue, the base unglazed with an impressed mark for Doulton Lambeth above ‘ENGLAND’ and the pattern number ‘2866’. Ewers in this form and decoration were made by Doulton at various times. The mark here allows fairly precise dating since the word ‘England’ became mandatory in 1892 and after 1902, when the Royal Warrant was issued, Doulton became ‘Royal Doulton’. The Doulton Lambeth works specialised in the production of stoneware art pottery achieving great distinction for their work in the later years of the nineteenth century. This ewer is an excellent example of their work in miniature and would be a valuable addition to a collection Doulton wares specifically or nineteenth century British art pottery in general.| Size: | Ht 16.6cm, Width (max) 10cm, Depth (max) 9.5cm, Base 4.2cm |
