LOT NUMBER 16
Figure of a Bear with hoop, Konakovo Faience Factory, USSR, marked, mid C20th
A ceramic figure of a bear playing with a hoop on a sloping base, the bear realistically modelled with a glossy black glaze and the hoop and stand in mustard brown, the base unglazed with an irregular circular aperture and a stamped mark in dark grey (a sprig above the letters ‘3nK’) and red stamped lettering ‘Made In USSR’. The mark is for the Konakovo Faience factory which was originally situated near the town of Kuznetsovo in Tver Province when it was founded in 1809, making it one of the oldest producer of ceramics in the USSR. In 1937 at the Great World Exposition in Paris the company won the Grand Prix and several artists working it won gold medals for their work, but after the war production concentrated on mass production of earlier designs until eventually pieces were made with renewed artistic influence. This figure can be regarded as one of them and was probably made in the 1950s when the sprig mark was used for a brief period.| Size: | Ht (max) 14cm, Width (max) 12cm, Depth (max) 6cm, Base 8.7cm x 5.9cm |
