LOT NUMBER 34
Majolica plate signed Mancinelli, Deruta, Italy, C20th
A tin glazed majolica earthenware plate with a slightly lobed edge, vividly decorated with floral sprays to the centre within a repeating arrow shape border, the rim with stylised lotus leaves and round dots, the reverse glazed white with handwritten marks to the centre ‘Mancinelli, Deruta, Italy’ ‘p.2/25’ ‘graffito e dipinto a mano’ and the footrim pierced for hanging . Italian majolica wares date back to as far as the fourteenth century and Deruta in Umbria was one of the centres of its production. The Mancinelli family have been one of the most important Deruta based manufacturers of this ware from the nineteenth century onwards and combined with other potteries in the region to establish the ‘Societa Anonima Maioliche Deruta’ in 1910. They continue to produce Majolica pieces today, painted by hand as the markings to the reverse often indicate. This dish is an excellent example of their more recent work and probably dates to the second half of the twentieth century. The bold design is an attractive contemporary reworking of an antique tradition.| Size: | Diam (max) 25cm, Ht 3cm, Base 14.5cm |
