LOT NUMBER 26
Pair of copper lustre Goblets decorated birds and flowers, Staffordshire, C19th
A pair of ceramic goblets of typical form, the flaring straight walled bowls with beading at the top and supported by a shaped stem resting on a spreading foot, the exterior with a copper lustre glaze interrupted by pink ground panels of birds and flowers, the interiors also glazed pink. Copper lustre glazes are created by suspending metal particles in a liquid solution which is then applied by a brush and fired. They were a favourite choice of the Staffordshire potters who used the effect on a wide variety of forms and in particular goblets, as here. Dating is to the nineteenth century and the form here, which recalls Georgian shapes, may indicate an earlier rather than later period. The decoration is extremely pleasing and the combination of gold and pink, which is also found on Sunderland lustre wares, is highly attractive.| Size: | Ht 9.5cm, Top diam 7.2cm, Base 5.7cm |
| Weight: | 305gm |
| Date: | C19th |
| Condition: | Good condition generally, one with an area of the lustre glaze missing at the base. |
