LOT NUMBER 29
Pair of Palissy style Ewers, probably continental, first half C20th
An unusual pair of squat form ewers each with transfer decorated panels of two cherubs on an encrusted ground in tones of green, blue and brown. The background decoration here has some similarities with French Palissy or Palissy style wares or those produced in the same style in Portugal such as Mafra ware, but the Victorian style cherub panels are rather a contrast with this and do not suggest that either of these countries is the origin of these pieces. Germany may be a possibility and similar pieces with a more realistically modelled mossy surface were indeed produced there from the 1920s to the 1940s and marketed as ‘Elfinware’ but again the resemblance is not close although these ewers are likely to have been made at around the same time to judge from the decoration of the panels. A mystery, then, which perhaps a buyer will be able to solve!| Size: | Ht 6cm, Width (max) 8cm, Base 3cm |
