LOT NUMBER 1
Boy seated on anchor, watercolour, Hector Caffieri, Circa 1900
Boy seated on anchor, watercolour, Hector Caffieri, signed by the artist. Circa 1900. Hector Caffieri (1847 - 1931) was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, the son of French parents who had settled temporarily in England. He studied in Paris at the Académie Julian with Jules Joseph Lefebvre and under the academic painter Léon Bonnat before returning to London where he began exhibiting. In 1885 he was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. He travelled regularly across the Channel to the French coastal town of Boulogne-sur-Mer and settled there permanently in 1897. It was there that he made studies of the fishermen, peasants and children, along with watercolours of quaysides and coastal scenes, all of which constituted his principal subject matter. He continued, though, to exhibit in London where his work was appreciated and found a ready market.Size: | 8 ¼” x 7 |
