Silver Cricket Box, Islamic probably Persian, early C20th
A silver box with openwork sides and a pierced cover most likely intended as a portable cricket cage, in the manner of similar Chinese designs, the sides with two geometric openwork bands between raised grooved borders, the cover with an elaborate openwork design incorporating swirling stylised foliage, raised heart and bird form plaques, and two roundels, inset with three hardstones in amber and celadon, the base flat and stamped 'R A'. The style of decoration suggests Islamic work, probably Persian in origin. Weight and quality of decoration indicate a circa date in the early C20thSize: | 49.5mm x 42mm x 33mm |
