LOT NUMBER 7
Fine Quality Chinese Wicker Basket with a loop handle, mid Twentieth Century
A fine quality Chinese Wicker Basket of rounded rectangular form with a loop handle and terminals in the form of an endless knot.Basket weaving was a traditional Chinese handicraft and many of the examples were made in South West China. The earliest pieces date back as far as the 'Warring States' period (c475BC to 421BC) and even further before that. The tradition was encouraged after the founding of the People's Republic of China and this example probably dates from that period.
The simple and elegant form of this basket is created from highly detailed woven wicker work with a criss cross diamond design and ropework borders. Each handle terminates in a twisted knot design which is a version of the well known 'endless knot' motif, one of the eight auspicious symbols. Dating is probably to the mid twentieth century, around 1960.
