LOT NUMBER 35
Pair of Art Deco Style Cambridge Ware Ceramic Vases, 1930s
A pair of hexagonal ceramic flower vases of beaker form with flaring necks and stepped bases, decorated with ‘zig zag’ designs in blue and gold on a pale blue mottled ground, the interior similarly glazed with gilding at the rim and the base glazed in turquoise with an impressed mark ‘Cambridge’ and scratched marks ‘1’ and ‘4’.There are very few examples of pieces with ‘Cambridge’ marks but many similar pieces were made by the Brentleigh factory and another vase marked ‘Cambridge’ has a Brentleigh sticker underneath. Brentleigh was one of the trade names of the Howard Pottery Co Ltd in Shelton Staffordshire who seem to have made pieces from the 1920s to the 1950s. Since the style and shape here is very much Art Deco perhaps a dating to the 1930s is reasonable.
