Victorian Majolica Tazza, probably Adams and Bromley, late C19th
A ‘Majolica’ tazza in the form of a shell supported by three dolphin form feet on a neo classical style base of rounded triangular form with deeply milled edging. The colourings and glazes here are typical of the Victorian pieces produced in the ‘Majolica’ style (no relation to its tin glazed Italian counterpart), mainly in England but also variously on the continent which enjoyed an enormous popularity at the time which continues today. Animal and plant forms were used extensively and often combined with neo classical elements as here. This piece is not marked but similar examples are often attributed to the firm Adams and Bromley. John Adams & Co. produced earthenware, Parian, and majolica operating from the Victoria Works on St. James Street in Hanley from 1864 to 1873. The potteries were then taken over by Adams & Bromley until 1886. Few of their pieces were marked but many employed naturalistic decoration including marine motifs such as a teapot in the shape of a fish. The identity of the manufacturer, then, seems likely. Exuberant and colourful, this tazza is typical of Victorian majolica wares and is one of the less common forms.
