Hopi Thunderbird brooch 1960s
This is a large and substantial brooch that depicts a typical Hopi thunderbird design. In Native American mythology, the thunderbird is a powerful spirit in the form of a bird. By its work, the earth was watered and vegetation grew. Lightning was believed to flash from its beak, and the beating of its wings was thought to represent the rolling of thunder. The Hopi tribe is one of the oldest living cultures in history who migrated to Arizona in the 12th century where they live today. The brooch is signed with a monogram 'CA' and marked 'sterling' for 925 silver. It dates to the second half of the twentieth century, probably to the 1960s.Size: | 49mm x 35mm |
